Tell Trudeau we need a nuclear watchdog - not a lapdog!
To protect the profits of polluters, the Harper government muzzled scientists and turned independent industry watchdogs into lapdogs.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) was no exception.
In 2008, Harper fired the Commission’s president for imposing modern safety standards on Canadian nuclear reactors.
The new Harper-appointed president has behaved like a lapdog ever since.
Things are so bad, even CNSC staff are speaking out: a group of anonymous whistleblowers sent a letter to media alleging nuclear safety risks are being covered up. These specialists wrote anonymously because they fear reprisal.
The whistleblowers called for an independent investigation, but the CNSC president is doing his best to sweep their allegations under the rug.
This is a step too far. It’s time for the Trudeau government to protect public safety by cleaning up the CNSC. This responsibility falls on Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr.
Please tell Minister Carr to repair the damage done by Stephen Harper and clean up the CNSC!
