In August last year Genesis Energy announced that in 2018 it would shut down Huntly - the last big coal-burning power station in New Zealand. This would mark the end of large scale coal-fired generation in New Zealand.
This news was widely celebrated. Shutting Huntly is the right thing to do in a world seeking to avoid catastrophic climate change. New Zealand could and should be generating all of our electricity from clean renewable sources.
But in January 2016, it emerged that Genesis is colluding with other power companies to try and keep Huntly burning coal.
This is a disgrace.
In Paris, only months ago, New Zealand pledged to take meaningful action on climate change. Our largely publicly owned energy companies have an obligation to cut pollution and remove coal from electricity production.
Genesis Energy must stick to the plan and close Huntly’s coal-fired generators in 2018. To do otherwise flies in the face of the urgent need for climate action.
Sign this petition to tell Genesis Energy to shut down Huntly and commit to a just transition for its workforce and 100% clean energy.
