Dear Foreign Secretary David Lammy,

I am reaching out to you today asking you to step up and take decisive action to pass the Global Ocean Treaty into UK law.

You have committed to putting nature and climate at the heart of foreign policy and yet you are failing to act on ratification of this Treaty. That’s why last week, Greenpeace activists climbed the entrance to the Foreign Office with a clear message for you: ‘Lammy Don’t Dally!’ and ‘Global Ocean Treaty now!’ [1,2]

As you likely know, the Treaty can only come into force once sixty countries have passed it into their national law. Over 20 countries - including France and Spain - have already done this, and I am urging you to follow suit. The more you delay, the more you undermine the UK’s legacy as a champion of global ocean protection, and your personal commitment to put climate and nature at the centre of UK foreign policy.

I have cc’d Lucy Powell, Leader of the Commons, into this email in the hope that you can work together to pass the Global Ocean Treaty into UK law, and bring us closer to securing the vital ocean protection you have promised. 

So David Lammy, will you be the global leader on ocean protection we need?

Tell Lammy: Don’t dally

In 2023, world leaders agreed to an historic Global Ocean Treaty, when put into effect, will protect 30% of the world's oceans.

But for the Treaty to enter into force, at least sixty countries must sign it into law - and the UK should be one of them. But Foreign Secretary David Lammy is delaying the UK’s commitment.

That's why four Greenpeace activists climbed the entrance to the Foreign Office to send him a clear message: ‘Lammy don’t dally’ and ‘Global Ocean Treaty now!’
