Dear Sir Keir Starmer,

As the UN Ocean Conference unfolds, the UK is noticeably absent from the growing list of countries turning their promises into action on ocean protection. A total of 50 countries have now ratified the Global Ocean Treaty and the UK is missing from that list.

It’s disappointing that the UK government has failed to prioritise finding even a small amount of parliamentary time to ratify the Treaty. Your government pledged to put nature and climate at the heart of Labour’s foreign policy so now – as the world watches – is the time to prove it. [1] Every delay weakens the UK’s global standing – and delays protecting the high seas.

That’s why I’m urging you to prioritise the Global Ocean Treaty in UK Parliament before the UN Ocean Conference comes to a close at the end of the week. This is a chance to lead on one of the most critical environmental issues of our time.

Keir Starmer: Global Ocean Treaty now!

Right now, world leaders are meeting at the UN Ocean Conference to decide the future of our oceans. But the UK is lagging behind.

In 2023, leaders agreed to an historic Global Ocean Treaty, which when put into effect, can help protect 30% of the world's oceans.

But for the Treaty to enter into force, at least sixty countries must sign it into law - and the UK should be one of them. The UK government has publicly committed to this, but they’re failing to deliver.
