Dear Jonathan Reynolds,

I’m writing to urge you to terminate the two exploration licences that the UK sponsors and ban deep sea mining for good.

When Loke Marine Minerals went bankrupt, after pleading for investors just months prior, it clearly demonstrated to the world how unstable and unprepared the deep sea mining industry is.

Deep sea mining poses a serious threat to one of the last truly untouched parts on Earth. Not only will it risk irreversible damage to the ocean floor, but it would threaten biodiversity, impact the entire water column and harm coastal and Indigenous Communities that rely on healthy oceans. [1]

Over 232,000 people have signed the petition calling on the UK government to set the global oceans off-limits to deep sea mining for good and it’s now time for you to do your part. [2]

If the government is serious about protecting our oceans, it needs to get behind the effort to secure a global moratorium at the International Seabed Authority and drop UK deep sea mining licences immediately.

It would be disappointing if the UK government awarded these exploration licences to another company willing to destroy our seabed for money.

So will you drop the licences and vote for a global moratorium at the next ISA meeting in July?

Jonathan Reynolds: Drop the exploration licences

The deep sea is the largest untouched ecosystem on earth – but the deep sea mining industry threatens to destroy huge parts of the ocean floor and wipe out species that haven’t even been discovered yet.

We need to stop this destructive industry before it starts.

The UK government is still sponsoring rogue corporations to explore the deep sea via exploration licences despite its own pause on the practice.
