Dear Foreign Secretary,

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to end all UK arms export licenses to Israel and do all you can to end the blockade of aid into Gaza.

In the early hours of June 9th, the Madleen, a UK flagged ship carrying twelve peaceful activists and humanitarian aid, was intercepted by Israeli forces before it could reach the shores of Gaza and breach the illegal blockade. The amount of aid on board the Madleen was symbolic. After weeks of the Israeli government blockading humanitarian aid, the people of Gaza are facing mass starvation. The Israeli government is now only permitting a slow trickle of aid to reach designated distribution points - nowhere near enough to prevent a famine across Gaza. Starving families make long, arduous journeys to reach these points only to return empty handed, or to be met with gunfire from IDF troops. 

The UK government has a moral and a legal responsibility to prevent genocide: we cannot simply watch as the Israeli government obliterates Gaza and commits genocide against the Palestinian people. Pausing trade talks and condemning these acts as monstrous is simply not enough. The vast majority of UK arms licenses to Israel remain in place - including for the export of F-35 fighter jet parts. You previously justified the continuation of licenses on the basis of Israel’s right to self-defence. But as you acknowledged in your statement to the House of Commons recently, the Israeli government speaks openly of “cleansing” Gaza and “destroying what’s left”. As long as the UK sends arms to Israel, it is complicit in this. 

At a time when strong, moral leadership on the international stage is in woefully short supply, I urge you to do the right thing before it is too late. End all arms licenses to Israel immediately and demand an end to the blockade of aid reaching Gaza. You will be remembered by the decisions you make, or fail to make, to protect the people of Gaza.

UK GOVERNMENT: DEMAND AN END TO THE BLOCKADE OF AID TO GAZA AND STOP SELLING WEAPONS TO ISRAEL NOW

Greta Thunberg and other peaceful activists were obstructed and illegally detained by Israeli forces while trying to deliver vital humanitarian aid to Gaza. The ship, named the Madleen, was detained in international waters which is yet another violation of international law by the Israeli government.

The situation in Gaza is urgent. That’s why Greta Thunberg and other activists put themselves on the line - to expose the failure of governments like ours to act.

The UK have finally acknowledged the horrors happening in Gaza, but are yet to take any meaningful action to stop them. They’re still selling weapons to Israel and refuse to impose sanctions on them.

This is a critical moment, the eyes of the world are watching and we must pressure the UK to finally take meaningful action.

Tell Foreign Secretary David Lammy to demand an end to the blockade of aid reaching Gaza, and stop selling weapons to Israel now.
