Defend the Right to Protest

The new Labour government is escalating an unprecedented crackdown on peaceful protest. Tell Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood: stop the attack on protest.

Why this matters?

This government is bringing in new laws that make it even easier for police to restrict or ban peaceful protests.

The Crime and Policing Bill, currently before Parliament, gives police new powers to further restrict our right to protest. The government is even bringing in new measures that would let the police ban repeat protests.

These build on the clampdown started under the last government.

If passed, these powers would give ministers and police even greater control over when and how people can speak out, putting one of the UK’s most important democratic traditions at risk.

That’s why we’re asking supporters to send personal messages to the new Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood.

When her office begins receiving personal stories, one after another, it will send a clear signal that people across the country still value and defend the right to protest - and expect her to do the same.

Tell us what protest means to you

Use the box below to share a short paragraph in your own words. A few sentences is perfect. If you’d like some inspiration, you could write about:

  • Why protest is important to you - and why it’s a British tradition worth protecting
  • A memory of a protest you joined or witnessed, and how it made you feel
  • How protest has helped improve the world or inspired you to act
  • What’s at risk if we lose the right to speak up, act, and dissent
