DEMAND AN INDEPENDENT INQUIRY INTO NZ FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

Two recently leaked Government reports into hoki and southern blue whiting have revealed that deep water fishing vessels have been engaged in systematic under-reporting of catch, and fish dumping. The reports, hidden from the public, reveal an out of control fishing industry showing a flagrant disregard for the law. These follow reports leaked in 2017 showing systematic fish dumping in the inshore fishery.

These leaked reports show that MPI caught the fishing industry in the act, but it then failed to prosecute.

Until the Government makes MPI enforce the law, these unscrupulous practises will continue unchecked because fishing companies have an economic incentive to illegally under-report catch and dump fish.

MPI has clearly been captured by the fishing industry it’ is supposed to regulate. An independent public inquiry into the Fisheries Management System and its regulator is badly needed. This inquiry must not be run by MPI.

Sign and share the petition now, our oceans are in crisis.

Pressure from overfishing, pollution and a warming climate means whole ecosystems are collapsing.

We must protect ocean life because without it, life on Earth cannot continue.

THE LEAKED REPORTS

PETITION

I call on the Minister of of Fisheries, Stuart Nash, to establish an independent inquiry into New Zealand’s fisheries management system and its regulator, MPI.
