Let’s get dangerous diesel off our roads

The fumes from diesel cars are causing a health crisis in the UK. VW Group put more diesel cars on our roads than anyone else. If we want clean air, they need to ditch diesel but so far they’ve refused to even meet and talk. It’s time for a more direct approach.

Medics and activists are at VW’s UK Headquarters right now calling on the car giant to phase out diesel cars. Can you please email the Director of VW UK and tell him to listen to them? Let’s fill his inbox with tens of thousands of emails to make sure the message really gets through today.

120,000 Greenpeace supporters have called on Volkswagen to ditch diesel cars. 60,000 supporters have called on you personally to meet with Greenpeace to talk about the diesel health crisis. Given the urgency of the situation, and the need for immediate action to meet climate targets, I urge you to address this important issue.

There is an air pollution crisis sweeping UK towns and cities, causing up to 40,000 premature deaths each year. The main effect of breathing in nitrogen dioxide is the increased likelihood of respiratory problems. Children with asthma and older people with heart disease are most at risk.  That’s why today Greenpeace has set up an air pollution clinic outside your headquarters to offer air pollution health checks to you and your staff.

Toyota, Nissan, Fiat Chrysler and Volvo have all made serious moves towards ditching diesel. VW Australia is axing diesel cars –why doesn’t VWUK do that too?  VW’s electric car expansion plans toward 2025 are a step forward, but continued diesel car production is two steps back.

A Greenpeace investigation shows that over half the cars tested by car companies after Dieselgate up to September 2017 are failing to meet emissions standards and wouldn’t be allowed on the roads if tested today.  These are some of the newest cars on the market. Producing ever-newer diesel engines that continue to fail to meet the standards is insufficient action to tackle the air pollution crisis.

Likewise UK consumers have lost confidence in diesel. The SMMT reported UK demand for new diesel cars was -24.4% in July 2018 compared to July 2017. This has been a sustained declining trajectory. Meanwhile new research suggests that diesel cars produce as much carbon as their petrol counterparts.

Given diesel’s health impacts and petrol’s climate concerns, the only sustainable technology of the future is clearly electric. VW Group is obviously committed to electric but continuing to market diesel cars in parallel undermines the potential gains of electric technology for people’s health and the planet.
