Dear Jes Staley,

In the UK, over 138,000 people (including over 30,000 Barclays Bank customers) have called on Barclays Group to make a commitment to not fund  TransCanada’s Keystone XL or Enbridge’s Line 3 tar sands pipelines, both of which will soon likely be seeking financing. Of those 30,000 Barclays UK customers, several thousand have pledged their willingness to switch banks should Barclays continue to offer funding for such projects.

New pipelines will lock in tar sands production for years to come which will make the objectives of the Paris Agreement nearly impossible to meet.
As well as the impact on the climate, tar sands pipelines risk  local environmental impacts affecting land, water and livelihoods of local communities. The pipelines also lack the free prior informed consent of Indigenous communities: over 150 First Nations and Tribes across US and Canada have signed the Treaty Alliance Against Tar Sand Expansion.

By choosing to fund tar sands pipelines companies  Barclays is undermining any ambition to align its lending portfolio with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Barclays is the only UK bank still choosing to fund dirty tar sands pipelines when their peers around the world are moving away from them. Barclays now lags behind HSBC, BNP Paribas, and ING, banks which have all ruled out funding for tar sands pipelines. In October, the international financial services company NN Group became the latest company to distance themselves from tar sands and tar sands pipeline companies.

Avoiding the worst impacts of climate change depends on leaving the vast majority of fossil fuels in the ground. Now is the time for Barclays to act on the risks these pipelines carry and to stop providing the money to build them.

Tell Barclays' CEO to stop funding toxic tar sands pipelines.

Barclays are the only UK bank still choosing to fund toxic tar sands pipelines. These pipelines aren't just putting the global climate at risk - they're also threatening Indigenous Peoples' human rights and way of life.

Scientists all over the world are telling us that if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we must reduce our emissions and fossil fuel use. If tar sands pipelines are built, it'll mean the production of fossil fuels continues for years, even decades.

In North America, Indigenous communities are already leading the fight - their homes and way of life are being threatened. Let's stand with these communities and protect their homes, and our planet.

If Barclays stop choosing to fund these climate-wrecking pipelines, the whole project will be at risk. Tell Barclays to stop funding toxic tar sands pipelines.
