Loblaw, Sobeys: Time to step up and ditch single-use plastic!

It’s time that Canada’s biggest supermarket chains take concrete action to drastically reduce their plastic footprint and offer their customers unpackaged alternatives. Make them take on the challenge!

It’s nearly impossible to avoid single-use plastic when shopping for food and other necessities.

Yet, tens of thousands of customers have urged major retailers to ditch single-use plastics.

Sobeys announced its decision to ban plastic bags completely from its cash registers by 2020... but this first step must be followed by more concrete measures to reduce the company’s plastic footprint, and other major retailers must do the same in order to phase out disposable plastic packaging.

We are calling on the two industry giants in Canada, Loblaw (Provigo, Superstore, T&T, No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart, etc) and Sobeys (IGA, Sobeys, Safeway, Foodland, Lawtons, etc) to listen to their customers.

Send an email to their CEOs and tell them you’ve had enough of the plastic waste generated by shopping at their stores.

Metro, Canada’s third supermarket chain has released a very weak packaging policy, meaning its customers’ shopping carts will still overflow with plastic. So, we’re calling on Loblaw and Sobeys to go beyond Metro’s policy and take real steps towards phasing out single-use plastic packaging.
