Join Greenpeace Aotearoa New Zealand to learn about peaceful civil disobedience, inspired by Te Whiti and Tohu of Parihaka, Ākenehi Tōmoana, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.
We’re living through a climate emergency. It’s already endangering our health, homes, food security, culture and our wildlife and wild places. We have just 10 years to turn this around. Our politicians should be acting like our house is on fire. But they aren’t.
Emissions are still rising, including here in New Zealand. Although the Government has banned new offshore oil exploration permits in principle, in practice they are extending licences and allowing oil companies like OMV to drill for new oil and gas that we can’t afford to burn.
Despite knowing about climate change since the 1980s, oil companies have spent billions on PR campaigns to deny the science and lobby Governments to do nothing. Together, they have prioritised profit over people, and failed utterly to respond to the climate emergency we now find ourselves in. It’s no surprise that people all around the world are rising up against this.
Peaceful civil disobedience has been a catalyst for change throughout history and has been used by Greenpeace over the last four decades to demonstrate the immense power that people have to change the world. We’ve seen that power amongst a new generation. Millions of students are now regularly striking from school for the climate, and tens of thousands of people are taking part in high profile mass civil disobedience activities.
Through peaceful protest and civil disobedience, they are having an impact. It’s working. But this movement needs all of us to save our climate from the brink. Join to find out how you can be part of growing this movement for change.
The training will offer a variety of workshops spanning the spectrum of tricks and tools, both philosophical and practical, to help us resist the culprits behind the climate crisis, including oil companies like OMV. Covering strategy and tactics, philosophy and history, banner making and blockading - and all things in between. We will also have screen printing for our new campaign logo so bring along a light-coloured cotton shirt and we will print it for you!
