I call on Jacinda Ardern to exclude New Zealand First MPs from decisions that affect commercial fishing, and to undertake an external review of all Talley’s-related decisions made by her Government to ensure there are no conflicts of interest.
Stop NZ First control of fisheries decisions
BREAKING: Leaked tapes from Minister of Fisheries Stuart Nash have just confirmed that NZ First MPs Shane Jones and Winston Peters blocked stronger ocean protection, and prevented increased regulation of the commercial fishing industry - specifically the cameras on boats programme.
Since taking power in 2017, the coalition Government has consistently delayed and watered-down legislation that would affect the commercial fishing industry and protect the oceans, but until now the reason for this has been disputed.
Commercial fishing heavyweights Talley’s has been making undeclared donations to the New Zealand First Foundation. And now a leaked call from Minister for Fisheries Stuart Nash has confirmed NZ First MPs are well and truly in the driving seat on fishing decisions.
NZ First has played a critical role in a number of decisions that could have provided protection to the marine environment - but fell short, instead prioritising commercial interests.
We’re calling for NZ First to be excluded from decisions on fisheries and oceans issues, and for an independent review of all decisions taken.
