The federal government recently announced its intention to address extreme wealth inequality in a COVID-19 Economic Response Plan this fall. But there was no mention of a wealth tax.
Yet, as Canadians face the severe social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the wealth of the ultra-rich is growing and soaring: just in Canada, the top 20 richest billionaires increased their wealth by a total of $37 billion since March.
Inequalities don’t end there. Globally, the richest 1% of the world population also disproportionately cause CO2 emissions, fuelling the climate crisis to the detriment of more vulnerable communities who are suffering the consequences.
The ultra-rich have acquired their wealth through an economic system that relies on the exploitation of the planet and people in order to function. It’s time to change the rules.
We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to address both the climate crisis and reduce inequalities, by investing in a green and #JustRecovery, while leveling the playing field. A wealth tax would contribute to paying for just that.
Tell the government to include a wealth tax in the Economic Response Plan announced for this fall. The ultra-rich must pay their fair share to fund the green and just recovery from the pandemic.
To make the ultra-rich pay their fair share to fund a green and #JustRecovery.

A recent report shows that 76% of Canadians already support a wealth tax. It’s time for the government to listen to them!
